Sports Massage

Sports Massage is a specific application of massage which can benefit anyone who engages in physical activity for the purpose of sport or fitness irrespective of age, fitness and performance level. Sports Massage is the science and art of applying massage and related techniques to maintain the health and enhance performance of the athlete.

Physical activity stresses the body and mind, incorporating Sports & Remedial Massage into an athletes program may assist the recovery time following strenuous activity. At OPTIMUM the athlete’s requirements will be fully understood and appropriate restorative massage and associated techniques will be used to restore athletes to pre-injury levels of physical and psychological levels of fitness. Taking it a step further, working closely with the athlete and the other members of the performance team, restorative massage may assist in the goal of exceeding the previous level of fitness and limiting future injury. For the uninjured athlete sports massage is of major benefit as it may assist in maintaining a positive training cycle and offer early detection of any problems arising from the stresses encountered in training and competition.

There will be the appropriate use of

  • Recovery massage – for the uninjured athlete recovering from strenuous training and or competition.

  • Remedial massage – for athletes with minor to moderate injuries

  • Rehabilitation massage – will become part of a comprehensive treatment plan for athletes as directed from other members of the medical team.

Sports & Remedial Massage at OPTIMUM involves manipulation of connective tissue including muscle, skin, tendons, ligaments and fascia. Incorparated within the sports massage are advanced soft tissue techniques such as Muscle Energy Techniques, Soft Tissue Release (sometimes known as ART), Facilitated Stretching (PNF) and Passive Joint Mobilising techniques all of which may be utilised to assist in the correction of imbalances in soft tissue caused by repetitive and strenuous physical activity and result of trauma. These techniques correctly applied will assist the natural healing processes during the phases of soft tissue repair.

Event Massage

A suitable program for Pre and Post competition massage can also be undertaken to assist the individual or team in the preparation and recovery phases of competition.
